How to Leave a Job on Good Terms

Show respect and gratitude – it will go a long way
We cannot emphasise enough how important it is to leave your current employment on good terms, bear in mind that your next big job may depend on how you leave your last one – no matter how difficult circumstances may be it is your prime objective to leave with grace and dignity.

Consider the following:

Inform your immediate supervisor or manager before discussing anything with your colleagues; your letter of resignation should be officially addressed to the HR department.

Be careful when expressing the reasons for your departure in your letter of resignation, because they could be mentioned in a future reference.

Tell your current employer how much you have enjoyed your job and how you have developed.

State that you would recommend your present job to others because it has helped you to realise your skills and potential.

Offer to stay until a replacement is found (within reason) a minimum of two weeks’ notice.

Suggest training your replacement or providing a detailed hand-over because you do not want to leave them in the lurch.

Say you will be contactable should any problems arise.

Remark on how you wish the company every future success.

Thank your manager and your colleagues – it is possible you may meet them again.

If you have had a problem with a particular colleague try and repair issues before you leave.

You may be asked to attend an exit interview and give feedback on the company; it is significant to be constructive in your criticism as the company may find your information useful.

Return any company owned items such as computers, mobile phones, text books and if you have had a company car clean it.

Complete your work as far as possible this includes any projects you may have been part of or give direction so that someone can easily follow.

Ensure your area of work is neat and tidy, empty your desk and leave it in an orderly fashion.

Maintain to be a productive employee right up until your last hour of employment – if you slack during your notice period you are just throwing away all your hard work.

Remember you want a good reference and a smooth exit is essential.

Do not boast about your new job.

Send a thank you note to the company and keep it positive.

You must leave on good terms because nothing will diminish your hard work and damage your character than to leave on bad terms and most importantly bear in mind that you will be leaving the door open should you wish to return.
