How to prevent burnout whilst working from home

Feeling burnt out? Do you feel as though you never switch off? An overwhelming amount of people now find themselves struggling to switch off whilst working from home. This is unsurprising seeing as the lines between home life and work life are increasingly blurred. So we’ve come up with five top tips that will help you unwind and prevent burnout.
Firstly, what is burnout?
Burnout is an extreme feeling of fatigue and exhaustion. According to Pines and Aronson, burnout refers to “A state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by long term involvement in emotionally demanding situations.”

- Having a negative attitude towards your work
- Dreading the thought of work
- Being easily irritated by colleagues
- Difficulty getting to sleep and staying asleep
- Having no interest in work and difficulty concentrating
- Feelings of sadness and emptiness
You now know what burnout is and how to spot the signs, so how can you prevent burnout whilst working from home?
1 – Be strict with your personal time
Do you get the urge to check your emails out of work hours? Do you consistently start work early and finish late? Be strict with your working hours and get into the routine of sticking to them. Where possible try to keep emails and phone calls within those hours. This will not only prevent burnout but will increase your productivity during those strict working hours.
2 – Stop taking on more than you can handle
Do you feel like you have a never-ending to-do list and not enough hours in the working day? When you are experiencing a constant battle between work overload and not enough time, burnout is inevitable. To prevent burnout, write a to-do list, don’t take on more than you can realistically achieve, and start delegating work that is not essential to your job role. 3 – Take time for breaks and exercise
This is a simple but necessary tip to prevent burnout. Do you find yourself sitting at your desk for hours on end? One of the most important points to remember when working from home is to get up, take a break and get some physical exercise. Not only is exercise great for your physical health, but it will also give you the emotional boost you need. To prevent burnout you need to prioritise self-care such as taking breaks, exercise, quality sleep, and healthy eating.
4 – Take your annual leave
Take a break from work completely. During this uncertain lockdown period, you may think it’s a waste of time to take your annual leave, however, it’s more important than ever to ensure you have a good work-life balance. Take the time off you need to rejuvenate, focus on yourself, and bring back balance to your life. There are plenty of things you can still do during your “holiday” such as visiting friends and family, taking a trip to the local beach, a long country walk, or scenic hike (all abiding by government social distancing guidelines).
5 – Focus on your purpose
Finally, focusing on the positives and finding the deeper purpose to your role can prevent burnout. Rediscover your purpose – is it helping job seekers find their perfect role, connecting with new clients, or helping to support the nation through this uncertain time? Whatever your purpose, find it, and keep it in the forefront of your mind.
